Recent media reports look to the Food Guide Pyramid as a cause for the obesity epidemic. However, many of these stories do not consider the fact that countless Americans have not used the Food Guide Pyramid information on serving sizes and serving ranges when making food choices.

Highly respected nutrition experts feel the Food Guide Pyramid needs to be viewed for what it is: a practical and appropriate tool when used in nutrition education as a part of an individualized and thorough intervention for behavior modification. Quickly blaming it for our weight trends is most likely not looking to the actual cause of the trend.
